Feel the Chill with Malachi Gagnon’s “Fadeaway”

Malachi Gagnon’s newest release, “Fadeaway,” firmly establishes the young singer in a league entirely of his own. Taking inspiration from artists like Noah Kahan and Bon Iver, as well as his own personal roots in New Hampshire, Malachi crafts his own personal “snowbelt sound.” In this newest single described as “frosted-folk,” “Fadeaway” brings the chill of heartbreak and abandonment, that shivering feeling of having nothing left after a break-up. The painful lyrics and wistful longing have listeners attached to every word and praying, just like Malachi, for the day those formerly happy memories finally fade away.

Though the catchy melody and stellar production may initially grab attention, it is the symbolism and picturesque storytelling that keeps music-lovers enthralled. From the first line, “For September it felt a little too cold, so I gave you my favorite coat, looked good so you kept it,” the correlation between the coat and Malachi’s love is vivid. He goes on to say his coat–meaning his heart–was gone with the wind along with her. Wishing to bundle up in the warmth of love again, Gagnon sings “the sunniest days still feel so cold without you” while he waits for the wind to carry her back to him, and, “each and every gust gives me hope.” “Fadeaway” is just Malachi Gagnon’s latest example of his poetic songwriting.

Established listeners of Malachi are familiar with the singer-songwriter’s heart wrenching and authentic stories. At only 17 years old, Malachi brings a youthful perspective to topics that could otherwise be written off as “too-adult,” and he writes with cleverness, eloquence, and lyrical genius. Heartbreak and grief are nobody’s stranger, a sentiment Malachi knows all too well even at his young age. A perfect example of this is Malachi’s song, “Reason to Live,” a touching tribute to a close friend lost by suicide. Malachi’s experiences and songwriting provide a refreshing point of view and remind listeners that anyone can experience heartache in its many forms.
