Fresh off the back of winning Best Album at the Scottish Jazz Awards and supporting Gregory Porter at the Royal Albert Hall, one of UK Jazz’s hottest prospects Georgia Cécile shares the music video for her latest single ‘Bittersweet’.
The track sees the Scottish starlet in sultry-mode as her supple vocals showcase clever modal melodies and a poetic lyricism that glistens over a rich cinematic soundscape of strings and piano that emulate the ebb and flow of the tide. Teaming up once again with award-winning pianist/composer Euan Stevenson, ‘Bittersweet’ is an emotively hypnotic song that explores the tensions of a volatile yet deeply passionate romantic relationship. Lyrically, the song uses the dark, vast ocean as a metaphor for the hazards of love as Georgia laments “Lost in reeds, we drift with the tide”.
The album (which this is the 4th single from) entitled ‘Only The Lover Sings’ was released in September, topping the Official UK Jazz Album charts at No.3 – with tracks from the project picking up media support ranging from BBC Radio 2, Jazz FM, The Independent, Wonderland Magazine as well as tastemakers like Jamie Cullum and Gregory Porter.
After supporting Gregory Porter for a string of four shows at the Royal Albert Hall in October, Cécile finished her mini Autumn tour with some of her biggest shows to date; the opening Gala for the prestigious London Jazz Festival at The Royal Festival Hall, a sold out debut at the infamous Ronnie Scotts and an industry showcase in association with SJM Concerts at Folklore in London.
Influenced by the likes of Nancy Wilson and Stevie Wonder, Cécile also sites contemporaries like; Melody Gardot and Celeste as inspiration for her sound. Already Tipped as ‘One To Watch’ by BBC Introducing and debuting SXSW in March next year, we look forward to seeing what 2022 brings!
