In this candid interview, we explore the profound and emotional journey behind the song “Angels.” The artist sheds light on the seemingly spontaneous yet deeply evocative process of crafting the lyrics and melody. From the initial spark of inspiration to the challenges of recording, we delve into how personal experiences of loss and separation have subtly shaped the song’s poignant themes. Join us as we uncover the intricate details behind this heart-touching piece of music.
2. You mentioned that the image of a woman watching her husband go off to war inspired “Angels.” How did this visual come to you, and why did it resonate so strongly?
This was just the initial image that came in to my head. I suppose it is a very old fashioned thing you may see in old films. The man going to war, the woman left alone waiting to see will he return. A person I knew on a professional basis had also lost a parent at the time I wrote the song also and that image came into my head also during the writing of the song.
3. The song deals with themes of loss and separation. How do you hope listeners will connect with these themes when they hear “Angels”?
I think the great thing about this song is that people could be able to relate to it in different ways. This song, for different people, could be about the loss of a sibling, a partner, a parent, a friend, a lover. I would hope people could relate to the song based any kind of loss they have experienced.
4. Can you describe the process of writing and recording “Angels”? Were there any particular challenges or memorable moments during its creation?
The song was written rather quickly and the whole thing just flowed. The lyrics and verses/choruses etc came naturally without much thought. Not all songs are as easy to write. The challenges came to the recording of the song as I didn’t realize there are 2 tempo changes towards the end. This was tricky for the recording process and in the studio I was challenged to try change the song to keep it the same tempo the entire way through. But I stuck to my guns and we were able to work around it and am delighted with the way it turned out.
5. How has your own experience with loss and separation influenced your music, particularly in “Angels”?
Certain loss and separation I have experienced have most definitely influenced my music, most being breakups. Some of my thoughts during the writing ‘Angels’ were people who have lost someone very close to them and the sadness they experienced. Also I do know there will be loss that I will experience and the possible feelings on the back of that were in my head during the writing of this song. Most of my music tends to centre around love, breakups and heartache and given there is no real influence behind these themes (not to get deep but) I do believe it could be a subconscious aspect to my songwriting process.
Whether inspired by personal loss, the imagery of wartime partings, or the subconscious workings of the artist’s mind, the song resonates with anyone who has experienced heartache. As listeners engage with “Angels,” they are invited to find their own meaning in the lyrics, creating a shared connection through music’s powerful ability to heal and unite.
