HeIsTheArtist Switches Styles And Doesn’t Miss A Beat On “Sumthin’ Sumthin'”

One of the most interesting voices in gospel music is back! Without a doubt, Heistheartist is one of the most unique performers in modern music, with his fascinating style of vocal delivery and thumping, emotional beats. Today however, he’s bringing to us something different, with a cover of “Sumthin’ Sumthin’”, an iconic track from neo-soul legend Maxwell. So, let’s dig into the single and see what’s up.

Listening to the single, you’d be forgiven for not figuring out that it’s by Heistheartist straight away. Changing up his hallmark style, “Sumthin’ Sumthin’” starts out quite upbeat, as opposed to the more demure tone we’ve come to expect from the artist. Of course, this quickly goes away the very second his vocal delivery kicks in, with his signature, stuttered-style of delivery.

It’s interesting how Heistheartist’s version of the song is much faster paced than the original, with some fun new additions. While it feels odd to describe a Heistheartist song as ‘fun and joyful’, that’s exactly what you get with “Sumthin’ Sumthin’”. Gone are the pained, almost claustrophobic soundstages, replaced with open, airy and bright sounds.

What’s surprising to see is just how good of a job Heistheartist does despite being out of his element. Nothing can change his immaculate taste in production it seems. Everything on the track is produced with precision and care, from the synths to the mixing. This has always been a strength of the performer, and it’s incredible how he’s carried it over and adapted it to work for a more upbeat, happy tune.

We’ve been talking a lot about the technical skill on display here, but that’s mainly because “Sumthin’ Sumthin’” is a relatively simple song. As a result of the song’s simplicity however, Heistheartist really gets to show off his breadth and creativity. He’s filled the tune with killer hooks, and upping the tempo makes in absolutely irresistible jam.

Heistheartist does not disappoint with “Sumthin’ Sumthin’”. Although he’s taking a risk making a song that’s different from most of his typical output, we feel he’s pulled it off with flying colors. Really, just great stuff.
