Review: Antigone – So Much For Gravity

Raleigh, NC metal outfit Antigone has released their new album, So Much For Gravity. The album is a 4 song ep written by Antigone and produced and engineered by Edward Hinson and Garrett Barefoot (Blackplate Productions).

The EP opens with “Burn The Memory”. The track kicks off with a rousing drum and guitar riff before giving way to two more intense metal infused rock riffs. Vocally, Kris Foells is superb. Both his clean and scream vocals are thick and textured.

“Swimming to Saturn” encompasses all of the influences that make Antigone who they are – a blend of alternative rock, thrash, and crunchy metalcore. During the intro and throughout the song, you can actually hear the eerie radio transmissions from the planet Saturn that were captured from NASA’s Cassini spacecraft from over 843 million miles away. Lyrically, the track seems to touch on a prfound loss and revoering from the grief.

“Ignite” is a full frontal assult of pure metalcore. The production on this track, and really the entire ep, is top notch. Blackplate Production really show their understanding of the genre and gelled very well with the band’s music. The tracks are clear, punchy, and have a great low end.

The EP closes with Antigone’s single “Sink Or Swim”, which is a thru and thru metal rocker, complete with thrashing verses, alt-rock choruses and a brutal deathcore breakdown.  Lyrically, “Sink or Swim” is about beating the odds at any cost. “This song tells the story of triumphing over adversity,” explain the band, “even if it means enduring great pain or death.”

Antigone’s So Much For Gravity is a great, if brief, set of songs, perfect for fans of Killswitch Engage, Trivium and In Flames.
