Over the weekend (18th November), Chance The Rapper made his debut as host for Saturday Night Live and the results were incredible.
From his monologues and musical numbers, to his sketches playing an over-excited teenager, a pizza delivery porn star, an awkward sports announcer, and more, everything was executed to perfection. Chance held the special Thanksgiving show like a pro and was funny as hell throughout proving he’s one of the most talented artists around today.
Following the quality of last night’s SNL clips, it’s safe to say the lovable Chicago-native deserves a sketch show of his own.
Chance-giving Monologue
Kicking things off with a monologue lasting just under five minutes, an almost nervous sounding Chance enters the stage to welcome everyone to the show. “I don’t have anything to promote tonight, the only thing I’m here to celebrate is Thanksgiving,” he says before announcing a donation of $1 million to Chicago public schools. He then breaks into his spirited Thanksgiving holiday anthem listing all of the hilarious faux pas the season’s family gathering usually has to offer.
Rap History
The “Rap History” segment sees Chance play the role of Kool Kenny Blade, one part of an imaginary old-school hip-hop trio the Soul Crush Crew. The sketch pokes fun at rapper Lil Pump via an avatar, who doesn’t know anything about the roots of hip-hop, Lil Doo Doo. Kool Kenny Blade, and his homies Chief Bronco and DJ Grand Wizard Karate, use their knowledge of “the game” to teach Doo Doo a thing or two.
Come Back, Barack
“Come Back, Barack” parodies the cheesy R&B videos of the ’90s and follows up Chance’s previous musical Obama tribute. Alongside Kenan Thompson and Chris Redd, he performs a Boyz II Men-style ballad with the trio singing their sorrows about what seems to be a distant lover. When Obama’s face is revealed after the first verse, the true meaning of the song becomes clear and carries the hilarious sketch right to the end.
Family Feud: Harvey Family Thanksgiving
Playing Steve Harvey‘s moustached secret son on the “Family Feud: Harvey Family Thanksgiving” section, he managed to keep it together, even when Thompson pushes him to the brink of giggling mid-sketch.
Porn Pizza Delivery
What can really be said about “Porn Pizza Delivery“? Well, essentially, Chance plays a porn-star in the “Skank Babysitter 17” titled segment. The clip runs through a series of hilarious adult movie cliché’s from the blonde bimbo babysitter to the questionable double entendres before three more unexpected guests show up.
Career Day
“Career Day” is pretty much like an episode of a Nickelodeon show but 100 times funnier. Set in a school classroom, Chance and Mikey Day‘s fathers arrive to give a presentation about their contracting jobs. The two boys do their best to better the previous kid Mathew, whose mum is a roller coaster designer, even though their dad’s jobs sound nowhere near as exciting. Highlights include the statement “raise your hand if you just got so excited you blew your butt hole out“, Mikey spitting water in another student’s face and the Colouring Book rapper being sent to the principal’s office in his underwear.
Sports Announcer
Possibly the best sketch of the entire evening, Chance hit a home run with his awkward “Sports Announcer” performance. His timing is impeccable here with his perfect uneasy pauses and phrases keeping things interesting throughout. From his inability to understand anything about the hockey game he’s reporting on, to mispronouncing everyone’s name (“It has like thirty letters in it, none of them are vowels,” and: “That’s an S and a K and a J next to each other, so that’s a nope!“) Chance proves why he went from musical guest to the show’s host.
