MTV Cribs was undoubtedly a staple in every twenty-somethings TV diet whilst growing up in the ’00s. 30 minutes crammed full of unnecessary luxury from priceless cars to private cinema’s Cribs was the perfect peek into the lavish celebrity lifestyle.
With the show having finally made a long-awaited comeback in June via Snapchat, we thought we would reminisce about the good old days of MTV Cribs. Follow on to see some of the most ridiculous times that the magic happened all those years ago.
Ozzy Osbourne
Kicking off the list, we have the first ever episode of MTV Cribs which featured one of reality TV’s favourite dysfunctional families, The Osbournes. All the way back in 2000, Ozzy Osbourne showed us around his Los Angeles mansion, along with his collection of Satanic artefacts, his Holy Bible (which he claims to burn every Halloween), and threatens to eat his dog. He also gets outed by his daughter, Kelly Osbourne, for liking Britney Spears and Nsync. This episode of Cribs would lead on to inspire the families own TV show, The Osbournes.
Aaron Carter
Back when Aaron Carter was a thing in 2003, MTV decided to feature him on the show. During his appearance on Cribs, he dons a Tupac shirt with a red bandanna and a backwards cap; looking as Florida as humanly possible. He tours the kitchen stating it’s the “most important part” of his day but doesn’t proceed to explain why. He doesn’t know what’s in the fridge, he doesn’t really cook, so God knows what he does in there.
Trick Daddy
Trick Daddy, unlike many other rappers on Cribs, doesn’t care all too much about his expensive whips, jewellery and basketball courts. Trick Daddy thought it of paramount importance to show his baby wipes in his bathroom which are used to keep “boo boo stains out ya drawers.” He follows that up with, “when you do the number 2, use Wet Ones.” Thanks for that Trick Daddy, thanks.
Gorillaz
The Gorillaz episode of the MTV reality series is probably one of the most innovative of them all. Stepping foot inside the animated band’s animated abode, you’re treated to an insight into the group’s somewhat sordid life (if they were actually real). The crib comes equipped with an in-house studio, private cinema, and its own private gateway to Hell.
Ja Rule
The first reason why this episode reaches ridiculous legendary status is that Ja Rule didn’t even live there. The pricey pad, over-the-top accessories weren’t actually his – he was merely renting it all for the weekend. What makes this episode even more epic is the fact that the owner of the house actually sued MTV for filming it without his knowledge. A lot of reality TV is of course staged, but this takes things to a new level.
Mariah Carey
The infamous bathtub scene commonly springs to mind when reminiscing Mariah Carey‘s Cribs appearance. During the hour-long NYC penthouse special, Carey showed off her favourite part of the house, the bathroom, mentioning she has only used the shower once because it has “too many knobs” before slipping into the tub wearing only a towel. The singer then continues to claim she has Marilyn Monroe‘s piano and works out on a StairMaster in stiletto heels.
Richard Branson
Richard Branson, the British entrepreneur, billionaire and owner of Virgin Records, has by far priciest pad to ever air on the show. This is no normal crib, this is an actual private island. Surrounded by crystal blue waters, and Mariah Carey hanging out in the patio hut (which costs $46 thousand a night to rent), makes this the most impressive estate on our list.
