We recently sat down with Mexican duo The Criminal Sounds to discuss their recent release ‘Deep Lies (VIP Edit)’, their mainstage debut at the famed EDC Mexico and much more in this exclusive interview with Music Crowns!
Hey guys, thanks for joining us! Can you introduce The Criminal Sounds to our readers?
We are Tadeo and Luis, and together we are The Criminal Sounds. We predicate freedom, joy and friendship through our music.
Why did you guys change alias?
It’s a little adjustment, but we don’t see it as a change, for us it is the way it always should’ve been. Also, we’ve been doing this for a while, but not as focused as we are right now. So having the opportunity to start over in a blank canvas just feels right.
Tell us more about the new release ‘Deep Lies (VIP Edit)? How can you describe the release to those who haven’t heard it?
Deep Lies is a Mixture of genres, it has techno, it has house, and a very catchy melody. All combined with the amazing Onyra’s lyrics.
It was an old release that you guys decided to give a revamp, what made you choose this track from your discography to edit?
There’s a couple of things from our past that we would like to keep in our new profile, this is one of those things. Just a little 2025 adjustment so we can play it in our new sets.
You recently made your EDC Mexico mainstage debut, how was that experience? What are the main things you learn from this kind of experience?
Playing on the mainstage of EDC Mexico was an honor and a great responsibility. Not only for being in such a privileged space, but also because the audience that is there is really engaged in the music and deserves absolute respect). We realized that beyond playing a show, we are there to share a message, to connect with the people and to make them vibrate with us. That same energy we want to bring to every dancefloor, no matter if it’s a big festival or a club.
You guys also work in music outside of production, right? How do you make time for both aspects?
After 12 years of career, we understood that there is no growth without discipline. Consistency, mental balance and physical well-being are essential to move forward. Part of that learning was to put the parties aside and focus completely on our music and every aspect of our career.
Tell us more about the masks, have you guys always worn them? Will we ever see you take them off?
Yes, masks have been part of our identity from the beginning. We wanted a difference in our image, something that would make our concept more solid. However, in all our shows we take them off at some point, because in the end, the most important thing is to connect with the audience face to face.
Who are some of your main influences in your music production?
Our beginnings were marked by artists like Armin van Buuren, Sebastian Ingrosso, Hardwell, Avicii, Porter Robinson, Afrojack. We have always searched to balance the energy and feeling of nostalgia that these producers transmit, adapting it to our own identity.
What can we expect in the coming weeks from The Criminal Sounds?
In addition to new music, we are preparing our solo show, which will be a very special project for us. We will start with smaller formats, but it will be an experience where everything from the production to the visuals and the concept is designed by us. We are excited to share it with the public.
What advice would you give to your younger selves starting out in the industry?
Life is not a constant party. We wasted time on that and learned that, if you really want to be recognized for your music, you can’t just focus on getting gig dates; you have to dedicate yourself to producing, improving and finding your identity. A lot of young people are desperately looking to fit into a label, but first they have to focus on connecting with people. Labels and events will come later, when the work is evident.
