Hey Kivanc, tell us about your new project ‘Winter’ and what it entails!
Actually the original piece was so beautiful that I felt it can be rearranged as a more epic version. The original work did not include Horns, Orchestral drums and many other symphonic instruments. I gave it a shot to see how it will look. In the later stage I decided to add some electric guitars and flutes to shine it a little more. The final draft impressed me to work on even more on it to add additional instruments like tubular bells, bass, choir and more. So, it was a trial and error method which worked well for me.
You’ve re-imagined this whole sonnet, is that correct?
Exactly! It was totally improvisational. Instead of thinking too much on it, I just added my flavor to notes on top of the original piece. I strongly kept the original violins, violas and cellos without tinkering any single note on them.
There are so many interesting instruments featuring on ‘Winter’, what are your favourites?
Orchestral drums, Turkish Nay, Rhythm guitars (subtle at the back) and most of all the Horns section.
What gave you the inspiration to do something like this?
The groove of this piece was so phenomenal that I wanted to add some rhythm section on it. I found some beats so parallel to the vibe of the track that they inspired me to add more and more tracks over it. Your classical background mixed with your 80s/90s rock sound really makes for something quite unique.
Are you happy with how it’s turned out?
Totally! I am also quite happy with the mix and mastering of it as it was my most challenging experience ever. The song had more than 150 separate channels and balancing the frequency spectrum was tough. I learned a lot and ready for the next challenge!
Who do you want this track and EP to speak to?
Classical music fans and fans of classical covers.
Has this project made you want to do something like this again?
Touching a masterpiece and upgrading it requires some courage. It feels awesome only if you really feel like you are adding up on it. For this piece I have no regrets. I am confident that it’s on a new level now. But I can do similar projects only if I really feel I’m doing the right thing by touching it.
Thanks so much for your time Kivanc! Anything else you would like to add, please do so here.
I would love to hear what listeners think via your channel.
