Matthew Joseph is a pop star in the making. From going through the modelling industry to music, he has always had a long and burning passion for creating pop songs that get rooted into your brain and don’t come out. A huge fan of Britney Spears and the whole 2000s dominant era of pop, Joseph takes us all back to those retro days with his new single ‘Waiting’ taken from his debut EP ‘POV’. It’s fun, nostalgic and brilliantly written, and we sat down with Matthew to learn more about him, his influence and what make him tick.
Hey Matthew, how are you? So, your new single ‘Waiting’ is out now – can you tell us what it is about?
Hey I’m good thank you hope you’re well 🙂
Yes it is I’m so excited! So i wrote this song basically being fed up of waiting for different things I guess, waiting for my boyfriend to propose was one of them, and I thought it would be a great fun track with hidden meanings.
Where are you from and what are your favourite things to do there?
So I’m from Holyhead North Wales, it’s a small town so there isn’t much to do really. But it is beautiful so I love going on long dog walks and eating out! Going to gigs and cinema are my favourite things to do to be honest, but tend to go further afield for them.
What are the key influences when it comes to your music?
I’m influenced by live music, the buzz of a live gig/ concert really inspires me. So when I’m recording my own music o have to envisage it as a live performance. Artists that influence me are ones that put on a show like lady gaga. I’m influenced by fashion makeup and hair, everything is important to me as an artist.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
Very fun energetic bubblegum pop! So I love bringing high energy 2000s bop vibes to my music, think backstreet boys / Britney meets modern music like dua lipa and years and years.
‘Waiting’ feels like the perfect pop throwback that we all need right now. How was the recording and writing process for this one?
Thank you I agree it’s just fun isn’t it. Not too serious or dull. I’m trying to bring fun pop- y vibes back!
So since covid I’ve been recording from my own studio in my attic, and it’s been so experimental and educational. Me and my producer have this method that just works now. we start by finding a vibe we like production wise and then I write lyrics to fit the track.
What’s next for Matthew Joseph? Is there an album on the horizon?
Lots more singles I think till my audience is bigger!
This track waiting is the lead single off my debut Ep POV out now also. It was just nice to have 2 years work in one place so I may release another ep. But for now just lots of fun singles till the time is right.
