Really excited for this one! We had the pleasure of sitting down with South Africa based singer, songwriter, producer and label boss TRESOR, discussing elements of his journey which have made him the person he is today, as well as his collaborations with Drake, Metallica and more!
Tell us more about your new song ‘Wale Wale’ with Sofiya Nzau? How would you describe it to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
I describe my new song ‘Wale Wale’ as a dreamers prayer. It’s a fusion of afro house blended with authentic African melodies from Congo and Kenya creating a unique incredible sonic experience.
How did you find the experience of working with Sofiya?
Working with Sofiya was pure magic. I love her distinct voice! The experience was really amazing and authentic. She is a special talent.
How did the creative process of producing ‘Wale Wale’ differ from some of your other hits like ‘Aphrodite’ and ‘Sondela’?
The process went really fast, we wrote the song over two sessions so it took us roughly 6 hours. We had no expectations except wanting to create something magical. The process was very close to ‘Sondela’ actually, which took roughly a few hours too. Both special records! Wale Wale is really creating phenomenal energy and I look forward to seeing it grow.
Who are your main influences in music and why?
I am generally inspired by music from Africa mostly from the old eras, 70s, 80s, 90s… and also some really incredible artists from around the world. So its really a fusion of influences from Africa and sprinklings from around the world. Papa Wemba, Fela Kuti, Lokua Kanza, Youssou Ndour, Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Salif Keita, Sade, Seal, The Beatles, Ray Charles, Daft Punk, Coldplay, just to name a few…
Can you explain how the collaboration with Drake come about? What did you learn from this experience?
The team loved the work I have been doing and reached out. Really incredible people! I learnt to keep being true to yourself as an artist and the world will always reach out.
If you could be featured on any Drake song, which would it be and why?
We already have one, it’s called Downhill. I sing the choruses. It’s a special song we did together. If I had to choose another song I would go for Passionfruit. LOVE THAT RECORD!
You’re also a label boss, what made you want to venture in to the business side of music?
I am passionate about the art of making music. With the label Jacquel Entertainment Group, the aim is to discover, develop and bring Africa’s freshest talent forward. It allows me to make music with many, many incredible talents, which is so much fun.
With such a busy schedule, what do you like to do in your spare time?
I listen vinyl records, take vintage car drives and often make more music
Who are some exciting artists from South Africa we should keep an eye out for?
There are plenty, I think exciting ones are Youngstunna, Batundi, Dlala Thukzin, Nkosazana Daughter, Ami Faku, Azana.
What advice would you give to your younger self just starting out in the industry?
Live your dreams out loud, stay true and authentic with your sound, don’t be scared to try new things and most importantly, be flexible and have fun with your journey!
