Early Life and Move to London
As a teenager, Anderson found solace and expression in writing lyrics and poetry. His creative spirit and love for music were evident from a young age. However, the political turmoil in South Africa during the 1980s led him to seek a new beginning in London. Embracing voluntary exile, Anderson left behind his native country, carrying with him a deep-seated passion for music and a desire to make a difference.
Career in the UK Record Industry
Upon arriving in London, Anderson secured a position as an international licensing manager at PRT/PYE Records, one of the most prestigious record labels in the UK. His role involved licensing the extensive PYE back catalogue, which boasted iconic artists such as The Kinks, Sandie Shaw, Petula Clark, The Searchers, Mungo Jerry, and The Real Thing. Anderson also managed current distributed artists like David Knopfler, the founder of Dire Straits, ensuring their music reached audiences worldwide.
In July 1988, Anderson’s expertise and reputation caught the attention of independent Canadian record label Brouhaha. He was headhunted by the label’s founder, Pierre Laurin, to serve as their A&R Manager. At Brouhaha, Anderson collaborated with in-house producer Colin Thurston and engineer Martin Aelred Colgan. Together, they signed and produced notable acts including the hard Electronica band Westwon, Dennis Seaton (formerly of Musical Youth), Philip Japp, and the UK Eurovision entry Live Report, which achieved notable success by finishing 2nd in the 1989 Eurovision contest and charting at no. 79 in the UK Charts.
Founding Hummdrumm Records
In 1990, Anderson decided to venture into the entrepreneurial side of the music industry by establishing his own label, Hummdrumm Records, under the umbrella of his distribution company, Discovery Sounds. The label’s first signing was the independent act UK TAG, which produced two releases: the vinyl EP “Amateurs” and an extended CD single “Examine Me Roughly.”
Anderson’s career trajectory continued its upward climb when he was headhunted once again in 1994 to join Mo’s Music Machine, the UK’s largest dance distributor. There, he headed the International Licensing and Export division, further solidifying his influence in the industry.
Continued Success and Legacy
Ronny Anderson remained a prominent figure in the UK music industry until 2008, during which time he formed his own record label and music publishing companies, continuously developing and signing new artists. Hummdrumm Records, though dormant for a period, was revived in 2014 with the signing of the heavy metal band Everafter, releasing their music on CD and digitally. The label has since continued to grow, signing and developing a diverse range of acts including The Indigo Rising, Toucan, and Martin Aelred Colgan.
Transition to Teaching and Ongoing Contributions
After 23 years in the record industry, Anderson retrained as an English teacher, a role that allowed him to share his knowledge and passion for language and music with a new generation. Despite this career shift, he continues to be actively involved in the music scene, releasing, publishing, and developing new acts through Hummdrumm Records.
