Over 20 thousand songs were submitted from commonwealth nations between 2018 and 2022.

7 grand finalists were chosen from Australia, Canada, Malta, Malaysia, Singapore, Saint Lucia and the United Kingdom.

15,630 people took part in the initial round of public voting (see highlights here).

Many of these grand finalists received significant national and international support and press coverage.

A second round of public voting saw over 10 thousand registered songwriters and music industry professionals affiliated with the UK Songwriting Contest and the Guild of International Songwriters and Composers invited to take part to help choose the overall winner.

The commonwealth song contest is run and organised by the UK Songwriting Contest with all songs submitted from Commonwealth Nations submitted to the UKSC receiving free and automatic entry into the event.

The winner of the contest was Canadian singer-songwriter Terra Spencer who hails from Windsor, which is near Nova Scotia.

Her song ‘Brick and Mortar’ tells of her affection for the old Windsor Wear plant by Highway 101.

Before becoming an award winning singer-songwriter Terra Spencer was an award winning funeral director, so it appears whatever she lends her hand to always produces amazing results.

Malaysian multi-instrumentalist Belle Sisoski came second with ‘Stop Your Games.’

In her own words the song is about “complex emotions triggered by lockdown, isolation, adapting to a new way of life, dealing with the loss of normal, flashback to fragile early emotional state of childhood, an expression from the lens of a child.”

Belle then goes on to explain that she “was also inspired to capture the raw, dark and complex emotions of the pandemic effects while journeying through that unusual time.”
