INTERVIEW: AVARA

AVARA is simply an artist that if you don’t know her, you will get to know her one way or another. Her debut single ‘lose my mind’ is a captivating pop track that exemplifies why she is one of the most exciting pop stars on the planet.

The video rightly showcase AVARA’s westernised style that infuses R&B and Afrobeats, making for a modernised track that resonates with listeners worldwide. We had the opportunity to sit down with AVARA, to learn more about her process as a songwriter and artist, her biggest influences and so much more, in this deep dive interview at Music Crowns. Enjoy!

What initially inspired you to pursue a career as a singer-songwriter, and how did your self-taught approach shape your sound at such a young age?

I’ve always been drawn to the power of music, how it can make you feel seen, understood, and less alone. Growing up, music was my safe space, my way of processing emotions and making sense of the world around me. When I started writing and experimenting with melodies, it felt natural, almost like I had found my voice. Being self-taught allowed me to experiment freely, without feeling constrained by rules. It gave me the freedom to develop a raw, authentic sound that’s uniquely mine and constantly evolving as well as giving me emotional balance and inner peace. Your influences range from Billie Eilish to Elyanna. How have these artists shaped your genre-blending style, and what elements of their music resonate most with you? Billie Eilish’s fearless vulnerability and Elyanna’s ability to infuse her cultural roots into her music both resonate deeply with me. Billie taught me that you don’t have to fit into a mold to connect with people, as authenticity is what people are drawn to. Elyanna inspires me with her effortless blending of traditional sounds with modern pop elements, as well as her experiments with mixing different styles and genres which is something that is close to my heart. From them, I’ve learned to embrace my individuality while remaining emotionally honest, which is the core of my genre blending style.

Congratulations on the video for your debut single ‘lose my mind,’ it’s stunning! What inspired this creation?

Thank you! The video for ‘lose my mind’ is a visual representation of the chaos and beauty of feeling deeply consumed by love and the emotions around it. I wanted to explore the idea of being caught in a dreamlike state, one moment at peace, the next overwhelming. The inspiration came from my own personal experiences with love and its confusion. I worked closely with the director to create something that felt intimate and cinematic, almost like you’re stepping into my mind and feel me losing it and then coming back to my senses again.

As a storyteller, how important is the visual component of your music to you? Do you see it as an extension of your artistry?

The visual component is incredibly important to me.

Music tells a story, and visuals can amplify the emotions and themes in ways words and sound alone can’t. I see the visuals as a natural extension of my artistry, and a way to deepen the connection between myself and the audience through the feeling of deep emotion. Whether it’s through a music video or song artwork, I want every element to feel hypnotising, emotionally intense and intentional. Your music already seems to be leaving a lasting impression on listeners all over the globe.

What do you hope your audience takes away from ‘lose my mind’?

I hope listeners feel seen and understood. ‘Lose my mind’ is about the messy, raw, and beautiful parts of being human, as well as the joy, the heartbreak, and everything in between. I want people to feel like they’re not alone in their emotions and that it’s okay to embrace the chaos within themselves.

As you continue to grow as an artist, how do you see your sound and style evolving in the years to come?

I see my sound becoming even more experimental as I explore new genres and love mixing styles and wish to collaborate with other artists in the near future. I want to dive deeper into storytelling, weaving in influences from my own life and culture. My goal is to create music that feels timeless yet fresh, constantly pushing boundaries while staying true to who I am.

What’s next for AVARA? Can fans expect more singles or an EP in 2025?

Absolutely! 2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year. I’m currently working on new music and concepts, and fans can expect a few singles leading up to release this year. I’m also planning to introduce interesting visuals, collaborations, and possibly live performances to connect with my audience in new ways. This is just the beginning, and I’m so grateful to have every person following me on social media coming along with me on my journey!
