Hey Ceréna, welcome to Music Crowns! How are you doing?
I’m doing my best, thank u!
Sum up your music for us in three words!
conscious, healing, euphoric
Your upcoming single “Limitless” presents an electrifying blend of dance pop that pushes boundaries. Could you walk us through the creative process behind the single, from its inception to its final form?
Thank you, and of course. I’ve made it my goal since I started writing to find the sweet spot between my two biggest inspirations, pop and club, and a desire to bring them together in a way that honours pop but caters to the club. However, it’s a challenge to manoeuvre through such a profit-driven industry, especially as someone who has been deemed “not marketable” or “difficult to market” by many, while maintaining artistic integrity and trusting myself to know what to do. I try not to think about this too much in the process, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t affect me. The song itself took me 10 minutes to write, but it took me months to find peace with my vocal takes. I record my demos using a mic from cheap earbuds, usually in my room next to bed at night.
This makes for a super raw and real vocal performance and a lo-fi quality that ends up creating a texture I really love but is hard for me to replicate in a studio environment. As soon as my brain is aware that I’m in a studio and it’s time to “work”, that’s where my neuroticism and perfectionism begin to gnaw on my psyche. I won’t go too much into it, but the recording studio is a traumatic space for me and writing these songs is hella personal… so I struggle with letting anyone witness this side of me. Thankfully, I’m surrounding myself with incredible artists in these spaces that are helping me heal and grow, and learn when to finally let go of a song. Thanks Jaymie Silk (prod. of LIMITLESS) for reminding me I’m that bitch, and thank you Karl Lund (recording/mixing engineer) for holding space for me with patience, grace and without judgement.
What did you want to convey with this particular track?
“Limitless” encapsulates themes of self-discovery and embracing change. How does this single reflect your personal journey and the message you want to convey to your listeners?
I don’t know how many can relate, but the state of this world and our humanity weighs on me a lot, and I use music to translate my discoveries and epiphanies into pieces of art that can be experienced and processed. The irony of LIMITLESS (and many songs I write) is that although I know them to be true, I struggle to believe the words myself. I struggle to accept myself as a limitless human being with infinite potential, capable of making my dreams come true and achieving my life’s purpose… even though I’m asking everyone else to find that within themselves. I am a human being, just like everyone else. Not a hero, not a saint, not an idol, but a humxn trying their best to survive. This is what I want us all to reconnect with because we’ve lost our humanity and our spirits are in crisis trying to recoup and repair it. This is my attempt at helping us do this together.
You’re a strong advocate for supporting marginalised artists and fostering diversity in the industry. How do you intend to use your platform to drive positive change and create a brighter future for QTBIPOC artists in the digital age?
I just can’t enjoy my life and successes knowing how much help this world needs. Race, gender and class are all constructs created to maintain power structures, to limit our collective growth and to make us forget about our shared humanity. Even though we share 99% of our DNA and all come from the same land, blanket identifiers were created to divide and package humans into neat little boxes void of nuance and complexity, dehumanising certain groups in the process in order to justify exploitation and means of production. Before these constructs existed, when we were hunters and gatherers travelling my foot, we were humans depending on each other to live another day. This is the energy I need us to tap into because we still very much need each other to survive our current dystopia.
My company Angel Spirit Entertainment Inc., is a step towards helping artists from communities that have been historically marginalised, but the goal is to transcend that and become a platform where artists thrive. Period. There is a plethora of hardworking, passionate artists with a voice that want to do the work, so there’s no need to control their art. A label should be there to support that and provide the artist with the proper resources to realise the vision, but it stops there. Unless the artist is asking for my opinion, I don’t need to be involved in their creative process. I know money can be made without manipulation and exploitation. This is the future I want to see.
And finally – looking ahead, what can fans expect from your upcoming EP and future projects? How do you plan to continue evolving your dance pop style while maintaining your signature artistic identity?
People can definitely expect more music coming their way. I am going to continue the musical exploration of my own humxnity and bring that message to the clubs cuz I want us to sing, dance, cry, laugh and sweat and heal TOGETHER.
