Hey TrUth, welcome to Music Crowns! How are you doing today?
Peace Family! I’m feeling amazing! It’s been super busy the past few days, but all is well and I’m grateful to get the chance to talk with you all today.
What genres or artists did you grow up listening to?
Well, my dad was a DJ back in his day so he played all of the “oldies but goodies,” like Smokie Robinson, Sam Cooke, The Temptations, Earth, Wind & Fire…artists like that. My mom played a lot of R&B artists like Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, etc. I also grew up in the church so there was always gospel music around me as well. Once I started buying my own tapes and albums, I began listening to more Hip Hop.
When did you start making music yourself?
I started making music in high school. I started out making remixes to the popular songs out at the time…turning them into funny songs. Soon after though, I realized that I was actually pretty good, and began to get serious about rapping.
How would you describe your sound?
That’s a good question! I feel like the best way to describe my sound is Alternative Hip Hop blended with R&B. Imagine the catchy melodies of Drake, mixed with witty bars like J. Cole, with the occasional R&B vibes of H.E.R. and Eric Bellinger. It’s very hard to describe because my sound is authentic to my moment. On one track you may get hard rap bars, and the next I may be singing to you…or I may be blending the two.
Who are your biggest influences in hip-hop?
My biggest influences are Drake, Lil Wayne, and J. Cole. I love the way Drake can blend the lines between R&B and Hip Hop, which is something I also enjoy doing. When I first started rapping, Lil Wayne was who I modeled my style after. Eventually, I developed my own sound, but I still love a good metaphor and crazy wordplay like Wayne! I feel like J. Cole is one of the best storytellers of our time and I admire his authenticity in his music.
Congratulations on your debut album, “It’s Time”! When did you start working on this record?
Thank you! I recorded my first song for this album back in February of this year, which was “Woke.” I knew I had to come out the gate hard and leave a lasting impression. “Woke,” set the standard for the rest of the album.
Tell us about the lead single “The Wave”!
In my opinion, “Wave,” is a club and radio banger. The beat is crazy! The flow has that bounce to it and the hook is catchy! I feel like this track has the potential to be the 2023 version of “Swag Surfin.” This is a song you can put on while you work out, while you’re getting ready to go out, or just to give you that extra energy to get through the day. You can’t help but move when you hear it.
What three songs are your favourites right now?
Wow! That’s a hard one. But if I had to choose, I would say “It’s Time,” “Wave,” and “Fallin’.”
And finally, what are TrUth’s long term goals?
I want to have music be my full-time job. I want my passion to pay my bills. Along with that, I want to create a strong, core fanbase, that truly enjoys my art and supports me as I create. I used to think I wanted to be famous…now, I just want to be appreciated.
