London MC Awate is a dexterous London griot with razor-sharp, witty wordplay. The rapper joined us at the Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen for a live rendition of his track ‘Incantation‘. Check it out below.
His debut album, Happiness, was recorded during his time on bail following a number of cases he was acquitted of. It features his stand-out tracks ‘Jewels‘, ‘The Ghetto‘, ‘Brutalism‘ and ‘Fresh Product‘ and was released earlier this year. It was produced by Awate’s frequent collaborator, Turkish Dcypha, and is glazed with nostalgic J-Dilla style hip-hop productions.
Awate was born in Saudi Arabia to Eritrean freedom fighters before he moved to London where he became involved in left-wing activism. He has received continued support from the likes of BBC Radio 1, Beats 1, BBC 1xtra, SBTV, Idris Elba and more and is proving he’s one to pay close attention to.
