About ‘Detach’
“Last week in Washington, Jon James Meyer filmed a beautiful video for one of my songs.

Detach was written directly from a dream, so does not follow the traditional tricks & rules of songwriting. This makes it feel more present, organic and self aware than many of my other songs have felt.

Powerful pieces of wisdom have come from subconscious landscapes, in my time writing.

When I watched this video for the first time, the imagery & subtlety captured felt like an almost exact manifestation of what I first ever envisioned for this song :

Pristine escapism, waywardness, introspection & solitude, and a door left ajar to interpretation.

This is a song about letting go, about evaluating what we need and don’t need, about transcendence & detachment .. an important lesson that I am still learning.”

“It seems that sometimes, dreams are meant to exist only as dreams, though it can be tempting to remain in their shelter or carry shiny abstractions into our lives.

I am grateful to Jon Meyer for bringing something that has felt metaphysical to life, and for such thoughtful & intentional filmmaking.

This was the perfect landscape for making a living dream & a bridge into reality .. nearly a visual confusion of the two worlds.

I don’t believe that we are meant to retain every bit of splendor & insight that we touch, yet so much of what we have experienced remains in our consciousness for the purpose of influencing us. What do we keep, & what do we part with?

We are part of everything, and everything is part of us, inextricably.

Dreams are meant to be elusive and temporary, leaving us with something that we cannot always figure out.
The beauty is that, traces of their singular magic can be found and recaptured in our realities, impacting us in unseen ways.

There is a hesitation to leave any environment that truly captivates us, yet, there is wisdom to be found in coming down from the highs & remembering what was.”
