On a mission to represent all that is underground, alternative and up-and-coming in New York City, Annabel Asher’s blend of heart-on-sleeve seduction and piercing electric grit has seen the LA-born artist embody a tragically beautiful persona. Embracing the ugly truths of coming-of-age, Annabel grapples with masochistic tendencies and unusual relationships, making waves with initial singles ‘555’ and ‘the Line’.
Returning to invoke a new era for her music, Annabel has just released ‘SHUT ME UP’, a lesson in glamour, fascination and allure and the first teaser from her debut EP BESTSELLER.
The opening echo, crisp clap and the weight of a scorched bass tone come together to set a lustful scene before an aggressive lead synth opens up a world of chest-pumping impulsion. The infectiousness seeps through into your veins. Once contaminated, audiences will be absorbed into a feverish pace, the craving, alternative, hyper-pop emotions crashing down through bold, dynamic production. It’s nothing if not attention-grabbing, but its tone effortlessly pulls you back in, listen after listen.
Annabel takes a deep dive into the songwriting process, “I wrote this song about that moment right before you know you’re about to kiss someone; when you’re a bundle of nerves and just cannot stop talking. This song, while sonically brazen, is exposing and vulnerable. I wrote this song to take back power in a situation where I felt like I had none, zooming in on everything going through my head and body at the moment I lost control. It also speaks to the eroticism and frustration of being involved with someone who you know has a certain power over you. Produced by Finn Bennett, we brought the song to life through exhilarating synths, defiant drums and fierce vocals. We wanted to make something bold and provocative and coursing with electricity. I wanted to convey that blinding, masochistic desire that has made me feel/act insane.”
