Los Angeles, California’s Arwen Lewis might have had a cursed career. Living in the shadow of her father, Peter Lewis of Moby Grape fame couldn’t have been easy. But instead of it being a burden, she’s made it an asset. In 2015, Lewis released her first album, a set of twelve Moby Grape classics, highlighted by a rollicking version of “Omaha.” Eight years later, she returns with the EP, Under the Stars. Like her debut, Under the Stars offers a few covers (Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, etc). But it’s her two originals that stand out, especially the hypnotizing “Winter.” It would be lovely to hear a full LP of Arwen Lewis original material.
Featuring Lewis’ father, Peter, Jonathan McEuen (son of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s John McEuen), Austin Beede and Graham Palmer, among others, it’s the duo of Angus Cooke (cello) and Jason Achilles (piano) on the alternate take of “Winter” that makes this six-song EP a must listen.
Under the Stars is out now on Omad Records.
