Based in London but originally hailing from further north in England, Becca James has been lighting up the capital since 2022. Featuring on Netflix series and unveiling an acclaimed EP. Collaborating with YR Records, she is on track to release her debut album God In Chains later in the year, currently teasing what is promising to be an introspective, expansive and transformative project.
With her latest single ‘Holy Bed’, soft pianos follow beautiful, vulnerable and honest lyricism. It’s a heartbreaking experience; the melodies themselves are cooling, gentle but with pain lacing every frequency.
As is often the case for Becca, despite the cinematic undertone of the instrumentation, the vocals are the star of the show. Becca’s melodic control allows for beautiful harmonies to fall around the listener, as if raining shards of reflective glass; every note is intentional and vibrant.
As the arrangement grows, it introduces rooting bass and momentous percussion. Becca takes on a state of divinity, transcending into something simply angelic.
She shares, “Holy Bed’ explores trauma, dissociation, and the struggle to reconnect with the body, self, and others; especially in intimacy, sexuality and embodiment. It’s about reclaiming safety and power. I’m so thankful that my co-writer and producer, Gustavo, created a safe space where I could tell this story and that Kim Nickerson added the final magic we needed to bring the track to life.
Recording the final vocals, I had to fully embrace the lyric ‘I’m a goddess.’ We turned off the lights and sang our hearts out, and when I heard the layers of voices, I was completely overwhelmed with emotion. Recording the grand piano at Tileyard was another unforgettable moment. Each time I sing it live, it is such a healing experience.”
