Southern retro-soul enthusiasts, Bonneville, comprised of songwriters Wes McGee and Jeff Hayashi, have seen waves of support, from global chart success, press acclaim and editorial playlisting. Their sound has carved out a reputation of preservation, staying true to their home town roots whilst bringing a new flair to classic old-school feelings. Currently leading fans towards their second album, Bonneville is as exciting as it has ever been.
The duo’s latest vibrant unveiling comes in the form of ‘Over Breakin’. A gracefully layered soul-drench sound rises like the sun, shining a light from the speakers filled with kaleidoscopic colour. The meticulously built tones across the broad instrumental spectrum all have a role to play, from brass sways to electric guitar solos, glowing vocal harmony or firm drum backbeat.
The cheery sound despite themes of internal struggle and heartbreak helps lead the music to a perfect new dawn of joy. Wes explains, “I was in the middle of a breakup and Jeff saw what I was going through while processing the shame and guilt of the way I conducted myself in the relationship. I think he wrote it to pick me up and get me back in the game of life,”
Jeff expands on the thematic backdrop of ‘Over Breakin’, “I wanted to convey empathy and encouragement. This is one of our brighter, happier, and uplifting tracks on ‘Flying Machine.’ It’s more in the vein of overcoming strife rather than being mired in it. I hope listeners, especially those going through any kind of loss, find it helpful in transitioning out of sadness and into the light.”
