Christmas Comes in Many Forms in Shari Rowe’s “Home For Christmas”

For most of us, the month of December is spent soaking in the cold, basking in the snow and sitting by the fireplace. For Southwestern songbird Shari Rowe, the Christmas season looks a little bit different. In her single “Home For Christmas (Underneath the Desert Sky)” Shari Rowe gives her listeners a new look at the holidays.

A native Arizonan, Shari Rowe has a unique perspective on what it’s like to experience winter festivities in a place that feels far from the set of your favorite Hallmark movie. “This song represents my home in Arizona. The desert isn’t the typical landscape that comes to mind for Christmas,” she states, but “Arizona at Christmastime is magical—the saguaros covered in lights, the big sky full of stars, the howl of coyotes, and bright flowers blooming everywhere. It was so much fun writing a holiday song that paints the picture of what that’s like.”

The Grand Canyon State has a winter wonderland exclusive to its environment, giving residents the ability to “bask in the sunshine during the day, having holiday barbecues, but temps drop low in the desert at night,” says Rowe, who can be found “cozied up around backyard campfires. Mexican hot chocolate, bright bougainvillea blooming, cacti covered in lights; these are all parts of the Arizona Christmas that we wanted to capture in this song.”

Southwestern sentimentality is nothing new to Rowe, though. Her discography is as vibrant and versatile as the landscape she describes, combining heritage (“Southwest”) with heart (“Long Hugs”) and topping it all off with a sprinkle of spontaneity (“Last Time”).
