Since studying at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in NYC, Dave Drake has garnered a revered reputation. Working with the likes of Teyana Taylor and Kehlani, he’s had the opportunity to tour the United States and refine his sound with some of the best. Now embarking on a solo journey, he’s able to tap into his soulful tendencies once again on the single ‘Heartbreak & Memories’.
The new track is built on a euphoric R&B atmosphere, the rolling cymbals of the drums coming alongside gut-punching sub-bass and humming distant reverberations. This provides the perfect backdrop for the heartwarming, conflicted vocal from Teni Tinks. Teni layers her glowing lead line with a set of spiritual harmony, expertly produced to balance love and heartbreak.
Dave Drake’s production is effortless, growing into a luxuriant set of frequencies, using perfect rises and falls in the music alongside a raw, real-life feeling.
Dave Drake explains the story behind the track, “I did a writing camp in Colombia with my friends, this record was one of the first tracks we cut. It was written by my longtime friend Shamba Griffin, an amazing singer, songwriter and artist. The track was inspired by being in a space where women feel like they have no choice but to hone a ‘masculine’ energy, while equally wanting to let their guard down and love again – but if it’s going to cause heartbreak, they don’t want it.”
