The eagerly awaited self-titled debut EP from the Dutch New Wave pair, ‘Pol,’ has been unveiled. Comprising of siblings Ruben and Matthijs Pol, their latest musical creation, a collection of five tracks, rekindles the prominence of New Wave with their distinctive interpretation of the genre.
The EP’s lead single, ‘L’Amour Fait Mal,’ aptly demonstrates their sonic direction. It constructs a lush analogue auditory canvas interwoven with intricate synth melodies and propulsive drum rhythms. These elements provide the backdrop for a nostalgically pensive vocal delivery, characteristic of the duo. In the words of Pol, ” ‘L’Amour Fait Mal’ harmoniously amalgamates vibrant vivacity and poignant sorrow, encapsulating the very essence of a new-wave love ballad.”
Showcasing a profound depth in their lyrical craft, the brothers drew inspiration from their own introspective journeys during the EP’s creation. The songs delve into their personal struggles, such as navigating toxic masculinity and discovering their role in the world, alongside the intricate tapestry of connections with those around them. The lush new wave soundscape woven by Pol is further enriched by subtle threads of post-punk and glam rock, resulting in a uniquely captivating musical fusion.
