Dyan Tai Returns With Stunning Visuals For ‘Hantu’

Gaysian Empress of Sydney Dyan Tai returns with stunning visuals for their empowering electronic liberating anthem ‘Hantu’.

An all East/Southeast Asian, AMAB (assigned male at birth) cast, Dyan wanted to explore masculinity, power, sexuality and queerness.

The music video is conceptual and meticulous, choreographed and directed by Shaun Parker and is inspired by Shaun’s internationally acclaimed music-dance show, ‘KING.’

‘Hantu’ which means ghost, is a haunting exploration of queer liberation by confronting inner demons and parts of our identity that are hidden. It peels back the layers of societal neglect and exposes how circumstances can mould individuals into reluctant participants of our own shadows. This track serves as a poignant reminder of the intricate dance between adversity and identity, a dance that often leads down unexpected, perilous paths.

On the single, Dyan Tai said, “We ended up with a really talented, diverse cast of dancers who identify as queer, non-binary and allies (Fio, Whyan, Billy, Tommy and Libby). I was also very lucky to collaborate with director Chris Quyen who is a great friend and did most of my previous videos including fan favourite ‘Freedom.’  The costume was designed by Erin Caroll from Not Sew Boring and makeup artist, Star Gayze,”

“I really want people to be able to see the diversity and excellence within an all East/Southeast Asian cast in ‘Hantu;’ and I really hope it shows that cultural diversity in arts and music is so important… and that beautiful intersection of arts and music with culture, gender and sexuality plays a vital role and should be championed in Australia.”
