Empathy returns with gritty anthem ‘Miles Away’

Dublin quartet Empathy debuted their first few singles last year, but this alone would be a disservice to the experience they’ve built on the live circuit. The project’s early days in 2017 saw it evolve from a creative outlet to invigorating stage performances, with sold-out appearances at The Academy and The Button Factory.

Now, they return with their third single, ‘Miles Away’, reigniting the fiery sensibility seen on the dark debut ‘Jeffrey’ and the raw aggression of ‘A Dying Breed’.

Opening with a whistling feedback tone and grungy blends of guitar, bass and drums, the four-piece takes time to build the tension, and it’s a full minute before the vocals peak through the cloudy backdrop.

The nearly seven-minute epic is gripping, staring down the listener with a steely gaze and forcing them to look inward. It’s masterful in its push and pull of comfortability and assertion, and throughout it all remains a fierce and rowdy anthem.

Miles Away describes the alienation and loneliness endured by a person who strives for success no matter what it costs them,” Empathy shares. “They serve themselves but mislead those with open hearts.
