Fred Brown, singer-songwriter and instrumentalist, has announced the release of his latest project. The EP, entitled simply ‘-’ sees the former automan member recorded between Goldsmith Studios and his home space, and features Ben Leftley on Drums, Joey Crouch on bass and Henry Arrowsmith on piano. Recognised on previous works by Rough Trade, Amazing Radio and BBC Introducing, it’ll no doubt continue to fuel a one-to-watch status for Fred.

The first teaser track from the EP ‘Marks Will Match’ features vast, reverberating vocal performances. Fred moves softly and emotively, harnessing filtered volumes across the instrumentation to achieve a reservation in the tonality and a sense of reflection overall.

When the bass arrives, along with the drums, they create a swaying optimism, grooving through the movements and plodding along gently before bursting into life for the final third. Soaring to euphoric new heights before floating back down to earth, it’s tender, roaring, and deeply affecting.

Fred adds, “These singles, and the EP as a whole, signify a transition in my life. It’s a time where uncertainty looms, but it hasn’t quite realized itself yet. It’s standing in the distance, with a pistol on its hip. But until you reach that point, you sweep things under the rug and try your best to have fun. Everything becomes a distraction.”
