Formed in the suburbs of Paris, trip-hop duo Frizzy P & Mr Cole are coming up as royalty to create a new wave for the genre, blending the old-school hip-hop sound, jazzy samples, and sleek delivery. After debuting in 2017, they’ve received praise from across the UK and France, amassing millions of streams, refining their vision and marking the scene as independents.
With their latest release, ‘The Bigger Man Sank’, they continue to tee up Ladi Dad III, a full-length next step for an iconic project series. The old-school feel oozes from bright, choppy keys, brass melodies and glassy flourishes. At the centre, a lush, deep and clear bass groove, cutting through a fantastic mix to ground the whole track.
Vocally, listeners are treated to a laid-back but focused flow, with an infectious melodic hook addition. Another vintage-laced slice that’s as refreshing for the modern era as it is nostalgic for the past from Frizzy P & Mr Cole.
“We touch on social pressures,” they explain, “the way the system pushes some people to the sidelines, how injustices keep repeating—yet despite it all, “there are still voices rising.” The song also speaks about the role of women in this struggle, with the idea that even when everything seems lost, resistance remains—through speech, through song. At the time I wrote the lyrics, I was watching the Brett Kavanaugh trial in full on Court TV, and it made me sick. I had deep admiration for Christine Blasey Ford. It’s a topic that didn’t stay in the public’s mind for long, but it hit me hard.”
