Genevieve Miles, the Bristol and Birmingham-based self-made musician, continues her musical journey with the release of her latest EP, “So heavy, so hard to hold.” Following the charismatic and genre-blending single ‘Tough Love,’ this dreamy and innovative indie-pop collection serves as a poignant testament to Miles’ emotional depth and musical evolution.
Originally penned in 2020, when Miles was navigating through emotions that felt burdensome and overwhelming, the six songs in this EP became a therapeutic outlet for her. Now, at 24 years old, the artist has faced new trials of loss and grief, finding solace in the wisdom embedded in her own past compositions.
In her own words, “It is so amazing to finally be releasing this EP, something we have been working on for years. I wrote these songs throughout 2020, and it feels like I’ve grown up alongside them. They’ve been there for me as little gems of hope.”
The EP opens with the focus track, ‘Beer In The Fridge,’ a bittersweet reflection on a past relationship, oscillating between imagined happiness and stark reality. The song’s acoustic beginning gives way to whimsical melodies, floating violins, and hand-tapped percussion, symbolizing an awakening from the dreams of the past to the possibilities of the future.
Throughout the EP, themes of dreams, nostalgia, hope, misguided love, and emotional growth are woven into the fabric of Genevieve Miles’ sonic landscape. Tracks like ‘Ocean’ showcase dark twists and The XX-style textures, while ‘Tough Love’ introduces 80s synth and reggae flavours. ‘The Past’ stands out as a sun-soaked anthem for hope, ‘Good’ diverts expectations with funky rhythms, and a reimagining of George Harrison’s ‘All Things Must Pass’ adds a nostalgic touch.
To celebrate the release of ‘So heavy, so hard to hold,’ Genevieve has a series of upcoming live dates, promising audiences an immersive experience into the emotional depth of her music.
