Go Hawaii make a reflective come back with ‘Auburn’

Italian indie duo Go Hawaii are making a comeback with a sound that feels dreamier than ever. Since their formation in 2016, the pair have a built fanbase through colourful blends across post-punk, dream pop and bedroom production. Their momentum slowly built toward the release of their 2022 debut full-length Trespass, but since then their release schedule has gone dark. Now, they restart the engine, travelling onward towards a fresh EP in 2025, and dropping the first teaser, ‘Auburn’.

‘Auburn’ truly reignites the fire, energised drumming, indie-tinged guitars pour out with vintage reverb, whilst gentle key tones provide stars in the sky. This leaves plenty of room for the vocals to set the mood. What the top line focuses on is a slightly fatigued melancholy, they’re reflective and longing, placing a weight on the instrumentation, starting in contrast to the bright spirit of the backdrop but steadily building towards it.

“We wanted to push ourselves creatively with this song, experimenting with a new approach to writing,” the duo shares. “We drew inspiration from the 90s Shoegaze sound and the raw energy of post-punk from that era. This time, we focused on diving deeper into the emotions, especially in the chorus, trying to convey a more intense feeling. The song is about a dull moment in my life, and I really wanted the lyrics and style to reflect that experience. I’m very happy with how it turned out, as it feels like both the sound and the words are deeply connected to that emotional state. The result was a completely different style than anything we’ve done before, and it felt like an exciting new direction for us.”
