Following an exciting set of teaser singles released last year, bedroom pop duo Go Hawaii are back with their long-awaited new EP, ‘Mangy’. Leaning into a rapturous post-punk sound, the duo employ reverb-driven soundscapes and colourful guitars to land back in the limelight for the new year.
Starting strong, the EP kicks off with the heady effort, ‘Santa Barbara’. Showcasing maturity in their sound, the opening track feels just as alluring and exciting as their back catalogue with an added edge of wisdom and retrospect. Keeping the flow strong, singles ‘Auburn’ and ‘Days Wasted’ are next to take centre stage before ‘Tangled In The Sun’ – a coldwave anthem, reminiscent of the glory years of The Cure and Cocteau Twins. Polishing off the EP lands a unique rendition of The Smiths’ cult classic ‘There is a Light That Never Goes Out’, highlighting the vast musical imaginations the outfit possess.
“This EP comes after a long process that started right after we released our first LP. The writing took much longer than we expected because life happened—there were changes in our personal and private lives that took us away from focusing on music the way we wanted to. It was a period where we weren’t feeling great mentally, and we needed time to figure things out in different areas of our lives. You can feel that in the songs, I think. But despite all that, we managed to make real progress in our sound and the way we write.”
