Inspirational, spiritual vocalist/producer Heistheartist releases his latest single from his The Book of Mary EP, “What Did I Do,” to much anticipation. “What Did I Do” is an eerie offering casting a melodic metaphor of regret and reflection. With the two main instrumentation sections of arpeggiated guitar, and a countered drum and bass rhythm, this simple yet effective reflection is strong with imagery of a confused artist coming to grips with his rumination. The straightforward and uncomplicated repeated lyrics, “What did I do; What did I do, What did I do, To feel so sad”, comes across powerfully as Heistheartist is able to channel his vocal prowess with ease as he demonstrates his superlative vibrato and legato. The vocals being the key to this short, (under two-minute) track as the message is direct and more impactful by the length of the reflection.
Typically an upbeat and spiritual vocalist, Heistheartist demonstrates his darker side with “What Did I Do.” As an uplifting artist, bringing joy and faith with his art, “What Did I Do,” shows more of this artist, with a challenging approach to his work. This meditative approach allows the listener to empathize with the vocalist and be more open to the rest of his work. Although, “What Did I Do,” may not be ideal for
mainstream pop radio, simply due to the short length of the track and lack of catchy choruses, does not invalidate the importance of this single as Heistheartist exposes his soul to the world. A powerful addition to any up-tempo playlist as the counterbalance, this track should find a following with audiences finding more about themselves.
