Heleen Van Den Hombergh is inspired by human nature, using her meditations on the human life, its origins, and events that have followed to cast a boundary-pushing, global-genre blending sound that is captivating and different.
This is shown in her latest project, the album Sapiens Unlimited, where she uses experimental instrumentation and thought-provoking lyricism and vocalisations. The earthy, natural tones are occasionally blended with more electronic creations.
It’s an intentional and interesting choice of sonics, a constantly changing emotional space within the overarching theme of what humanity can do. Rooted in story, it’s almost musical-esque in some places, with a vibrant use of vocals, not just as the melodic driver but as the glue that sticks all the elements together. Cinematic right until the very last moment.
Heleen explains, “Sapiens Unlimited may be my masterpiece so far. Reading our early history as human beings was sort of coming home, understanding what makes us human 10,000, 100,000 or even a million years later! We haven’t changed a bit to be honest, we’re still the deadliest species of all”
