Over a year since their releases went dormant upon the release of ‘Choir Song’, Her Picture is back. Since their debut EP dropped in February 2023, the Glasgow trio have received widespread acclaim, with multiple spots tagging them as next up. Anny Tahaney, Catriona Reid and Finlay Smith haven’t spent 2024 on the sidelines, though, writing, recording and gigging as much as they can manage, pushing the boundaries of their songwriting.
They mark their return and the introduction of this new sound with ‘Can’t Think’ a single that pours with igniting dark pop. Their harmonic tendency is glassy and eerie, turning up the distortion for fierce guitar riffs in contrast to defenceless and vulnerable vocal performances.
From floating beginnings into a raw, percussive body they masterfully control the energy, uniquely splicing their own sound together from a cross-genre palette. Quite the comeback, and stands Her Picture back in the spotlight for 2025.
The band explain the track in their own words, “Can’t Think, in simple terms, is about the fear of being known and seen. Particularly, the track explores the mortifying experience of being perceived when you’re not at your best and wanting to hide from the judgement of others. As a creative, there’s extreme pressure to keep adapting yourself and keep climbing that achievement ladder but sometimes that can’t be sustained because of what’s going on in your personal life. I think that’s where the central conflict of the song comes from; how do I make a career out of being spectated when I’m terrified of how others perceive me, and the control I need to give up to allow that relationship between artist and audience to develop myself.”
