Dream-pop newcomers high jump, are already creating a buzz thanks to their debut single and follow-up, ‘M2K’ and ‘CLIIAL’, released with Tip Top Recordings. Support from tastemaker playlisting including Spotify’s ‘Fresh Finds’ and a range of blogs has begun to build anticipation for the forthcoming debut EP from Harry Martin and Rick Holland.
high jump’s latest release is ‘Tide Away’, a fresh new single featuring Jamie Maier. Hypnotic, soft, ethereal and gleaming, the new single brings together subtle melodies and rhythms across the instrumentation, using their calm timbres to fuel a reflective and vivid vocal performance from Maier. Echoes of harmony create a beautiful atmosphere, finalising a sound which is both full of life and captivating in its ambience.
The duo explain the single, “Harry started Tide Away at the piano in early 2023 having spent time listening to artists like Frank Ocean and James Blake.
Unusually determined to finish the song before getting distracted by production ideas, the track maintained its intimately first-person narrative feel. The melody needed a steely vocal to cut through the subtle arrangement, so Jamie Maier of the band Tungz kindly lent some grit to the offering. In the mixing process, the embryonic piano was replaced by fingerpicked guitars, dueling over an increasingly moody backbeat – inspired by Big Red Machine and Bon Iver – and leaving space for Jamie’s soaring vocal.
Lyrically, we drew upon similar themes to our previous single CLIIAL: over-nostalgia and reconciling our view of the world as children with our view of the world in adulthood. A morning run along the beach during a trip back home was the visceral inspiration for Tide Away, as it seemed to encapsulate that conflict between the ‘places I remember’ and the range of sentiments they induce.”
