Katie Wighton Releases Joyful Burst Of Authenticity With Single ‘Real Thing’

Katie Wighton returns to her solo project with a bright burst of joy in her new single, ‘Real Thing.’ As any songwriter knows, creating a genuinely happy song are the hardest ones to write, yet Wighton meets it with authenticity, drawing on small moments of everyday happiness from her own life.
“Real Thing” blends indie-folk, bedroom-pop, and indie-rock with a distinctive Australian flair. Led by a slacker-rock guitar, the single begins as an intimate vignette of stolen kisses and sun-kissed lovers before evolving into a heartfelt confession of that elusive “real thing” we all seek. As the song progresses, Wighton’s voice is filled with conviction, expressing her nervousness against a backdrop of shimmering synths, crashing drums, and lo-fi guitars. The spacious production highlights the raw integrity of her lyrics, embedded in catchy hooks that linger long after the song ends.

Wighton herself comments on the process:

“It felt so good to write a happy song for once in my life! ‘Real Thing’ is not about sugarcoating things, though. It’s about the ups and downs and all-arounds. It’s about the holidays in Canada and the trips to Ireland; the tears and the makeup kisses; it’s about real love. My partner produced this song which made it all the more special. Writing the chorus of this song didn’t take long at all. I have been playing a LOT in open D tuning in the last couple of years and this is no different. The verses took me a little longer – I tried so hard to make them personal and not too cheesy.”

Wighton’s musical journey has been marked by significant achievements with All Our Exes Live in Texas, including an ARIA Award for Best Blues & Roots Album and accolades from the National Live Music Awards and AU Review Awards. Her solo career began in earnest in 2019, with her self-titled EP receiving wide acclaim. Notable tracks like “You Act Like A Child” and “King Size Bed” showcase her ability to craft memorable, emotionally resonant songs.

In 2021, Wighton began work on her debut album, The End, which was released in 2023. Recorded in Melbourne and Russell Island, The End was nominated for an ARIA Award for Best Blues and Roots Album and shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize. Rolling Stone Australia praised the album, noting its exploration of life’s highs and lows.

Beyond her original material, Wighton has an impressive list of co-writes with artists such as Colin Hay, Jenny Owen-Youngs, Jake Sinclair, and more. With “Real Thing,” Katie Wighton continues to solidify her place as a compelling voice in contemporary music, offering listeners a refreshing and heartfelt experience.
