Made up of producer Mayford Fox and the masked vocalist LowKey, the aptly named MAYFLOW use their experimental songwriting to tackle themes of mental health, self-acceptance and nihilism with a fusion of dance and hip-hop.
MAYFLOW’s sound is always one that defies boundaries. With BTY, they continue this tendency but drive it to new heights. At any given moment, the rhythms are synchronous and defiant of one another, topped with a vocal line that mixes the sensual with the ghostly.
Glassy percussion on top, thick, rich kicks in the middle and swelling depths of bass tones at the bottom, the pot is mixed into a rich sonic tapestry, harnessing something rebellious and confident in the frequencies. Thematically, this manifests in a bitterness for modern life and finding belonging in a world that does not provide it.
MAYFLOW explains, “This is a track about yearning, desire and frustration – what the soundtrack of a drunk drive in the night filled with bad intentions would sound like. Seeking for a little warmth, a little human connection in this cold nihilist world, but always looking for it in the wrong places. The universal need that we all share of feeling important for somebody is heartbreakingly and persistently unmet.”
