The Mayflow project rose from the ashes of the pandemic lockdowns, fusing dance, hip-hop and electronic experimentalism into a forceful and raw interpretation of the world around them. The themes production and vocal duo Mayford Fox and LowKey discuss include mental health, self-acceptance, and nihilism within the modern world.
In what is a bitter and coarse rendition of the spiralling power of depression, their latest track ‘Moon’, opens with a chopped spoken word, speaking to the endless weight of alcohol, loneliness and self-blame that can easily cloud someone’s hope for what the other side.
The track then drops into a mind-bending piece of vocal production and synth design, locked down by a punching kick drum. Bass tones swell and scream, whilst airy counter melodies float around the echoey and distorted vocal.
“I wrote ‘MOON’ about depression and the power that it can hold over somebody’s life. Penning the track was somewhat of an autobiographical experience of the last ten years of my life. I don’t want to tell anyone how to live their life, but depression can affect people in so many ways: it might get better, it might get worse. You might get into the lowest place of your life, but you must remember that life is for living.”
