NYC singer and songwriter Mimi Oz isn’t afraid to highlight vulnerability and personal struggle, as her brand new album ‘Growing Pains’ clearly illustrates.
A surreal new music video was recently released to promote lead single ‘Hate’, created as a collaboration with Oz and music video director Dylan Mars Greenberg.
Says Oz of the process behind the video; “When working with Dylan, she just has so many great ideas, everything seems to flow seamlessly, not without effort but in a very natural way.
I wanted the video to look and feel like NYC, it has this girl against the city, girl against the world, girl against herself kind of tone.
The original artwork I released for this single was a watercolour that I had painted of a black sheep with a psychedelic coat of fur.
I recreated this look by tying together bright pieces of scrap fabric into a long boa that I wore across my neck. The character is someone that people don’t understand, but are fascinated with.
The song was written after a long period of feeling displaced and disconnected socially.
When I wrote the song I was touched by the fact that so many people feel this way, and there is something natural about that experience, which I feel made the lyrics and song more powerful and relevant.
It became less about me, and more about a deeper sadness for humanity.”
Director Dylan Mars Greenberg explains how “Working with Mimi was an incredible experience, and an interesting challenge. Her song is incredibly intense and emotionally deep, and I felt it was important for the video to match this intensity.
I feel I learned something from the process of creating this with Mimi and I’m grateful for the chance I was given to visually explore the music.”
