MJ Fretwell’s musical ability flourished in the spare hours of the COVID-19 pandemic. Creating a positive from a negative, the rural West Sussex girl who had been performing since the age of eight wrote and produced new music from an attic- studio conversion in North-West London.
One of those tracks was ‘Tainted’, which now, four years later, is coming to light as MJ Fretwell’s debut single. Setting out a hazy, summery sound with gorgeous vocal sways and lush synth pads, there are layers of acoustic guitar, providing a natural rhythm beneath a vulnerable and graceful performance.
The uplifting sense in the single is furthered as more instruments join the arrangement, keys and strings floating and grounded at the same time. Next, the drums and bass, are impactful without compromising on the rose-tinted atmosphere. There are some tracks which ooze and indescribable sonic prettiness, this is one of those.
MJ shares, “Tainted is a love song about being stuck in a toxic cycle, unable to shake feelings for someone that you know doesn’t treat you well. It felt important to me to encapsulate this feeling in a song. I know more than one person choosing a relationship where they are suffering more than being happy, my past self-included”.
