Mola Oddity, a group which has become a rising star in Asia, is making the jump into new territories with the release of an English reimagination of their debut album The Other Side of Hope. Captivated by Jazz and African flavours, their sound takes absurdity in its stride, turning it into brand-new stories.
Birdy K, Yider and Asr., the trio behind the creatively dynamic nature of Mola Oddity bring uniqueness at its most pure to the new project. The Other Side of Hope contains ten tracks of untethered songwriting and artistic freedom. They capture moments of cinema within the tight, mind-altering rhythms, building on these strong foundations in the bass and drums with performative melodies and intentionally developing textural tapestries.
The intricacy is constant, each track almost searching within itself for new ideas and new portraits. All of this boldness, boundary-pushing and innovative process aside, Mola Oddity creates a project that is genuinely enjoyable to listen to, the journey from ‘tatalala’ all the way to ‘I wake up to love you’ is an elegant one.
Birdy K offers a glimpse into Mola Oddity, sharing, “For Mola Oddity, the creative process always begins with the arrangement: the music comes first, followed by the expression that naturally grows from it. This album is a collective recollection of impactful moments drawn from daily readings, films, and social observations. At its core, the album explores the many dimensions of “hope.”
Hope, in itself, holds the power to endure. Or perhaps, it exists because it is shaped by shadows, tears, absurdities, and fragments of brokenness—echoing the times we live in. Yet, despite it all, we must continue to yearn for hope. After all, if we are all souls who have chosen to return, then even the pain we once thought unbearable becomes something we can endure.”
