No Hard Feelings: Malachi Gagnon Gets Personal in New Single

As the music industry grows and evolves, so do its artists: pushing the envelope with their creativity, songwriting and age. Seventeen year-old Malachi Gagnon is familiar with all three. Influenced by the likes of Noah Kahan and Morgan Wallen, the rising star is making waves all before graduating high school.

A product of his roots, Gagnon owes it all to his hometown, stating: “my family has always supported me in my love for art…and really pushed me to continue chasing my dream of music.” After hearing him perform, his father took him to get his first guitar, and the rest is history.

Although young in age, Malachi Gagnon’s lyrics are relatable without being cliche, connecting listeners of all ages. His newest project is no different, diving into the complexities of love with a fresh perspective. His most recent release, “Stay”, available everywhere as of November 1, is only proof of the artist’s narrative versatility. While some hide their skeletons in the closet, Gagnon embraces them, crediting his past as the source of his inspiration.

“With ‘Stay’ I thought back to a moment when I remember feeling like I was losing someone, but did nothing to stop it. The regret I felt during this reveals itself throughout the song.”

Combining clear-cut vocals with Americana-inspired instrumentals, “Stay” is a sonic nod to the bargaining stage of grief, helping Gagnon “process feelings [he] didn’t know [he] still struggled with.” His longing is palpable, with lyrics and production crescendoing at the climax of the story to represent pent-up pining. As he transitions into a period of acceptance, the song  cleverly fades away, reemphasizing how ephemeral relationships can be.

With a production style reminiscent of Bon Iver (Justin Vernon) and a storytelling spirit that’s all his own, Malachi Gagnon’s “Stay” is perfect for breakups, breakdowns, and everything in between. Keep an eye out for Malachi Gagnon: he isn’t going anywhere.
