Little Rock, Arkansas native Pamela Hopkins brings us another one of her powerhouse performances with her latest single, ‘One Too Many,’ a tune that’s about drowning out your sorrows through having just a bit too much to drink. Presented with the gravitas we’ve come to expect from the singer, find out just how good the new single is in our full review of ‘One Too Many.”
Thematically, ‘One Too Many,’ actually serves as a follow up to the artist’s last single, ‘One More Last Kiss,’ which serves as the emotional catalyst for the events in the new single. Following a break up and a sad goodbye, the lead singer has now hit up a bar, hoping to drink away her sorrows no matter how many drinks it takes to achieve. It’s a surprising direction to go in, though one we’re sure many can relate to.
Lyrically, everything here is brilliant, describing every detail immaculately. We’re taken on a trip through the mind of the lead singer, as the bar they visit is filled with people dating and in love. It only serves to further upset our singer, who’s only response to this is to drink more, hoping to find out just how many drinks it will take to knock her into a stupor so she can forget all about her heartbreak and memories.
It’s actually quite a depressing song in this regard, though you wouldn’t be able to tell listening to it normally. This is thanks to the mid-tempo, guitar-lead feel that the single goes for. It brings a modern country vibe to the song, making it seem a lot more fun than what the subject matter would suggest.
Pamela’s vocal performance is also on point here, really selling the idea of someone drowning their sorrows away. It cuts out a lot of the edge that makes songs like these unbearable, much to the song’s benefit. While she doesn’t flex her powerhouse vocals on this song too much, the more laidback tone matches her relaxed delivery perfectly.
So, what’s our verdict then? Honestly, ‘One Too Many,’ is an uproariously good listen, one that’s fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously to its own benefit. While some may find the subject matter a bit too relatable, its more relaxed tone and upbeat nature makes it enjoyable regardless. We definitely recommend giving this one a listen, we’ll certainly be giving it a few more spins soon!
