Prabir Trio drops new single ‘Reincarnation Blues’ – a sitar-soaked ride through life and afterlife

The Prabir Trio just released their new song ‘Reincarnation Blues‘, the first release from their upcoming full length album. Performed and recorded live at Shockoe Sessions in Richmond, the song blends trippy guitar tones, a droning electric tanpura, and classic blues sensibilities. The sitar-inspired guitar sound is a clear shoutout to the band’s Indian roots—it’s a cool way to breathe new life into a blues song.

Frontman Prabir Mehta says the idea for the song came while he was visiting Bodh Gaya in India, where Buddhism was born. “I kept thinking about the cycle of reincarnation being such a beautiful concept, but ultimately I was having difficulty following the operational logistics of how reincarnation could work. I kind of arrived at the notion that not being able to escape the cycle of rebirth would probably be something worthy of singing the blues.”

The lyrics, “I’ve heard about Heaven and Hell and Valhalla, but what about that reincarnation stuff?” and “Well you could worry about it right now or you could worry in your next life”,  dive into life, death, and what might come next—show how Prabir is pondering the afterlife and the difficulty he was having understanding what it all means.

Backed by Kelli Strawbridge on drums, Jeremy Flax on bass, and Kenneka Cook’s harmonies, the band sounds tight, alive, and totally in sync. ‘Reincarnation Blues’ is the first taste of what’s next for the Prabir Trio as they lead up to their new album release.
