Sea of Lettuce offer up hazy new album ‘Any Day Now’

Hailing from Calgary, Canada, Sea of Lettuce was formed in 2017, the four members come together to bring fresh indie grooves to their home town and beyond. High-octane live shows have been balanced with a consistent string of albums and EPs, keeping up their momentum with each new appearance.

Their latest project, Any Day Now, sees Sea of Lettuce tackle new beginnings, the band sharing, “Any Day Now came together during a pivotal time in our lives. Balancing our musical passions with other career endeavours felt like it was becoming more of a challenge than ever before, and ended up influencing the central theme for this collection of songs.”

This whimsical, reflective core is echoed in its dream-like brand of indie rock. The instrumentation can occasionally feel distant, guitars and keys floating from moment to moment, untethered to the more rooted grooves of the bass and drums. The hazy sound is emotionally warming, blurring the lines between optimism and melancholy, allowing swaying, reverberating lead vocals to tie the silvery brightness into a nostalgic, honest package.

Short and sweet at nine songs and thirty minutes, the band give the audience a moment to have a little perspective, be a little more present, and let go of their stress. Transitioning from the freedom of youth to what feels like the restrictiveness of being an adult, Sea of Lettuce offer an understanding through their atmospheric songwriting.

The band continue, “Many of these tracks reflect on the desire to follow our dreams and make music our livelihood, all while feeling the pressure to find a more normal career path and settle into a mundane life. At the same time, a similar concept that emerged during the creation of this album was the need to enjoy our band-related experiences while we are in the present, rather than always worrying about what’s next. These conflicting ideas of thinking about the future while trying to stay grounded in the present can be found throughout the album.”
