Sungaze reveals pensive self-titled album

Duo Ian Hilvert and Ivory Snow have forged a path for Sungaze since 2019. The pair’s songwriting strength has not gone unnoticed, releasing multiple albums and building a committed core fanbase. Live, they bring an equal sense of presence, expanding their lineup to feature now’s sister Angela Colvin, Zach Starkie, Charlie Hausfeld and Justin Van Wagenen. 2024 has so far seen a string of enticing singles, culminating in a brand-new project.

Their third album release, Sungaze have unveiled their self-titled, their most ambitious yet. 10-tracks of shimmering reflections and ethereality, the project is empowered to encompass broad horizons, fuelling the fires of songwriting talent without limits of convention.

The influential hints of country, alt-rock, folk and shoegaze all feed into their psychedelic dreamland, adding a layer of grit to showers of wistful and spacey roots. Extended tracks arrive at vast peaks after pushing through a beautiful but pensive journey.

Highlights like ‘Not Mine To Hold’ offer a chugging, otherworldly descent, giving into the negativity and letting it pour out. ‘Pity’ follows with a dark and brooding sentiment, returning to layers of angelic optimism despite the shadows cast. ‘World Won’t Wait’ is a fantastic finisher, harnessing the rollercoaster into one final climax as the credits roll, leaving you aching for more.

In their own words, Sungaze put it, “We like to think of this album as a “coming of age” album. The songs are more personal and direct than we’ve written in the past, and each track on this album details pretty major life themes that have been present for us in the past few years. And as is often displayed in coming of age stories, there was an element of soul-searching and a level of self-acceptance that needed to happen in order for this album to even exist at all.”
