A group made of members of Sleepy Kitty, Harvey Danger, and Say Yes, Do Nothing, The Open Flames brings experience to their writing, residing in the realm of alt-rock, but with the capacity to explore new, untested ideas.
Their debut album, Same Time Next Year, was recorded in the UK capital but took shape over international listening sessions and focused practices.
The first teaser from this exciting new project is the single ‘Drop a Coin’, harnessing a broad narrative and cinematic intentions. Blending an alternative, guitar-based groove with layers of haunting vocal harmonies and softly swelling distortion. Members Evan Sult, Len Bendel, Dave Eastman and Paige Brubeck come together to set the tone for a new direction, the storytelling a transcendent element sure to set them on a course for success.
Dave explains the themes of the single, “We wrote the song with the metaphor of paying a tithe to a blind girl sitting at the Gates of Hell to describe the hesitation before knocking on the door of your prom date, or a wedding chapel. It was inspired by the final moments of Ian Curtis of Joy Division before he passed into another life. The song’s second half passes through the Gate to fly over a tormented landscape of Dante-esque souls who rise up howling from the fires and boiling muds of Hell.”
