Trevy James tees up album with the soulful ‘If I Get A Chance’

Decorating San Diego’s sonic palette with smooth soul since graduation from Berklee College of Music, Trevy James’ reggae influence, presence in the soul scene, and performances alongside Psydecar and Heaping Teaspoon have cemented his local presence.

Now, ahead of a brand new album Gray In The Beard, Trevy begins to expand his influence, appealing to fans with fresh sounds in 2025, epitomised in the new single ‘If I Get A Chance’. This new direction harnesses the power of a vintage-tinged love song, bringing expressive horns, rich harmonies and a bobbing piano as foundation.

The vocals have a gracious harmonic feeling, blessed with gentle arrangements. It’s warm, fresh and romantic, a well-deserving of an LP-length extension of its core ideas.

Trevy shares, “This record perfectly captures the stylistic tug-of-war between reggae and R&B that is constantly at play in my head whenever I sit down at the piano to write. I knew I needed to take this soulful R&B groover somewhere different in the verses, and I opted to just flip it completely on its head into a one-drop reggae groove. I’m very grateful to my writing partner, Psydecar’s Tim Pacheco, for his expertise in bringing that drastic change to life. His drum performance on this song was critical to the success of that arrangement move.”
