An album is rarely able to translate so wholly to a moving picture. But, the creative pairing of songwriter VALERIE and filmmaker Nicolás Casanova has morphed VALERIE’s debut album Within the Confines of You into a fantastical, detailed, and fierce short film ‘The Visual Odyssey’. VALERIE, soundtrack lead and leading lady, moves through time and place dynamically, capturing the changing worlds around her.
As the viewer, you’re taken on this journey through stunning cinematography and emotive storytelling. The dark-pop aesthetics and otherworldly presence of VALERIE’s vocals are the perfect pieces to finalise the puzzle, you have to see it to understand it fully.
VALERIE explains, “I was trapped in the places first. The album is simply where I described them using my words and my voice. Now, I get to show you. From the early days, I knew that WITHIN THE CONFINES OF YOU needed to be a visual record. I even wrote out the story of the album for myself in narrative form before recording, kind of like a short story. In doing so, I hoped to keep the soundscapes accountable to my goal of bringing the conflicts, characters, and settings that drive the record to life. These videos have been in the works since the summer of 2023 when I partnered with filmmaker Nicolás Casanova to see the vision through.”
